Anthropic says it is expanding from providing AI tools to biopharma companies toward participating directly in drug research and development, alongside six research collaborations.
The headline-making move is Anthropic’s acquisition of Mithril Medicine, a rare-disease biotech with one full-time employee, founder Cody Tranbarger. He used Claude to coordinate work with 11 external laboratories and other operations.
Anthropic says Mithril advanced a potential treatment for rare muscular dystrophies from an idea to promising results in mice in under 18 months. The work remains preclinical; if further results support it, human trials could begin as early as late 2028.
The collaborations span companies including Bristol Myers Squibb, BigHat Biosciences, Generate Biomedicines, Enveda, Divergence Labs and The Column Group. Anthropic reports Claude has been used for tasks across drug development, including molecular design, document review and clinical planning.
The broader bet is that AI could let small teams—and potentially individual scientists—coordinate more of the drug-development process. But a ‘one-person biotech’ still depends on outside labs, expertise and infrastructure, and early mouse results do not establish safety or effectiveness in people.
