Novartis ends BioArctic neuroscience deal worth up to $802 million

Novartis has ended its neuroscience collaboration with Sweden’s BioArctic, about 14 months after signing the agreement in August 2025. The program aimed to pair BioArctic’s BrainTransporter technology with an undisclosed Novartis antibody for a neurodegenerative disease.

The deal included a $30 million upfront payment and up to $772 million in potential milestone payments, plus tiered mid-single-digit royalties if a resulting medicine reached the market. With the program discontinued, those potential future payments are no longer in play.

BioArctic will keep the full $30 million upfront payment and says it will recognize the remaining unrecognized portion as revenue in 2026.

BioArctic said Novartis’s decision to discontinue the program was unrelated to the BrainTransporter technology. Novartis described the move as a review of its early-research priorities, not a safety or efficacy concern.

The termination applies to this specific program; BioArctic’s other BrainTransporter partnerships were reported as continuing.
