Shionogi agreed on October 5 to acquire Austin-based IntraBio for $2 billion in upfront cash, buying all of its outstanding shares. The deal is expected to close in November or December 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
The main prize is Aqneursa (levacetylleucine), IntraBio’s treatment for neurological manifestations of Niemann-Pick disease type C. Recent reports say it has also received approval for ataxia-telangiectasia, giving Shionogi a foothold in two rare neurological disorders.
Shionogi says the purchase will strengthen its rare-disease business and add IntraBio’s development expertise and pipeline. Reported programs include candidates for Pompe disease, Fragile X syndrome, and Jordan’s syndrome.
The acquisition builds on Shionogi’s recent expansion into rare diseases, including its purchase of the ALS drug Radicava from Tanabe Pharma.
