Oura and UC San Diego Health have launched SMART-BMI, a multi-year clinical study examining whether continuous Oura Ring data can help explain outcomes for people receiving GLP-1 medications or bariatric surgery.
The ring will track signals such as sleep, heart rate and physical activity between clinic visits. Researchers will compare these patterns with outcomes including weight loss, HbA1c (average blood sugar), blood pressure, cholesterol, quality of life and—among GLP-1 users—whether patients remain on treatment.
Reports say the study plans to enroll about 260 participants and includes a phase testing whether making ring data available to care teams can improve outcomes. The study is registered as NCT07736729.
The trial is intended to investigate whether wearable data is useful in obesity care; it has not yet produced results. Oura says the ring is not a medical device.
