Eli Lilly reported that its experimental combination, EloraTZP—eloralintide, an amylin-receptor agonist, plus tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound—produced up to 23.3% average weight loss after 48 weeks in a Phase 2b trial of 367 adults with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes.
At the highest tested combination dose, participants lost an average of 54.1 pounds. The comparison groups lost 14.8% on high-dose tirzepatide alone and up to 11.1% on eloralintide alone.
The combination also improved blood sugar:
the highest-dose group had an average A1C reduction of up to 2.9%, versus up to 2.4% with tirzepatide alone.
The key caution is tolerability. Treatment discontinuation due to adverse events ranged from 10.8% to 27% across combination doses, compared with 2.9% for tirzepatide alone; side effects were mainly gastrointestinal.
These are mid-stage results, not proof of an approved treatment. Lilly said it plans to advance the combination to Phase 3 trials.
