GSK plans $800M-plus Pennsylvania R&D and manufacturing hub

GSK plans to invest more than $800 million to expand its Upper Merion Township site in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, creating a biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing hub.

The project is expected to add more than 300 jobs over five years and retain about 4,500 existing GSK jobs across Pennsylvania. Construction is planned to start in 2027.

The hub will bring together commercial-scale biologics manufacturing, an R&D pilot plant, a centralized quality-control lab, manufacturing science and technology capabilities, and digital operations.

The expansion follows GSK’s separate, up-to-$800 million project in Marietta, Lancaster County, announced in 2024. Together, the Pennsylvania investments total nearly $1.7 billion.

Pennsylvania says GSK will be eligible for state manufacturing tax incentives. The headline’s reference to bonds is not reflected in the available reports, which describe tax incentives rather than a bond financing package.
