The FDA issued draft guidance describing how a single biologics license application could cover multiple patient-specific versions of a gene-editing therapy for certain ultra-rare, single-gene diseases.
Under the proposed framework, a new version that falls within predefined limits—an “Individualized Feature Space”—could potentially be added using laboratory safety and activity data, without a separate clinical trial. The FDA says the framework is a draft and is open for public comment; it is not an approval of any treatment.
The news lifted gene-editing stocks on Oct. 28:
Prime Medicine (PRME) rose about 20%, Beam Therapeutics (BEAM) about 14%, Intellia (NTLA) and Editas (EDIT) roughly 6–11%, and CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP) about 4%, according to the report.
The implications are not uniform across companies:
the proposal is limited to particular individualized therapies, and any benefit depends on the final guidance, each company’s programs, and whether products meet the FDA’s criteria.
