Variant Bio Expands Boehringer Ingelheim Collaboration into Cardiovascular Disease

On September 23, 2026, Variant Bio announced that it is expanding its multi-year research collaboration and license agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim to include cardiovascular disease, building on their existing kidney-disease work.

Variant Bio’s AI-powered Inference platform will integrate genomic, deep-phenotyping, and multi-omic data from globally diverse populations to discover and validate genetically supported cardiovascular targets.

The expanded agreement provides Variant Bio with an additional upfront payment and eligibility for license and milestone payments, bringing the potential total value of the deal to more than $250 million.

Boehringer said the partnership aims to identify targets that could enable first-in-class cardiovascular treatments. Specific financial breakdowns were not disclosed.

The original collaboration, announced in January 2026, focused on cardiorenal and kidney disease and had potential payments exceeding $120 million.
