PhRMA names Eric Cantor as next chief

PhRMA has named former U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor its next president and CEO. He is set to take over on November 9, succeeding Stephen J. Ubl, who has led the organization since 2015.

Ubl will remain as a strategic adviser through January 15, 2027, to support the leadership transition.

Cantor served in Congress from 2000 to 2014, including as House Majority Leader from 2011 to 2014. He later became vice chairman and managing director at investment bank Moelis & Company.

The appointment comes as the pharmaceutical industry faces scrutiny over prescription-drug prices, market access and regulation. Cantor will lead PhRMA, the trade group representing major pharmaceutical companies, through those policy debates.
