Flagship Pioneering wins up to $47 million biodefense contract

Flagship Pioneering has been awarded a Department of War contract worth up to $47 million over five years.

The agreement is part of the ONTARGET program, which aims to develop medical countermeasures against evolving biological threats.

Rather than funding one specific product, the contract gives the department access to technologies across Flagship’s portfolio of more than 40 companies and allows additional projects to be added over time.

Initial projects involve Apriori Bio, focused on rapidly adapting biological-threat intelligence and countermeasures, and Prologue Medicines, which develops medicines for serious diseases and biological threats.

The initiative may support broad-spectrum countermeasures, precision delivery systems, toxin-neutralizing technologies, immune enhancement, and artificial-intelligence or machine-learning applications.

The deal is being described as a new model for government-private-sector collaboration in biodefense, shifting toward evaluating and scaling platform technologies.
