Boehringer Ingelheim and New York-based Envisagenics announced a multiyear research collaboration and option agreement aimed at finding and validating tumor-specific targets for hard-to-treat solid cancers.
Envisagenics will apply its AI-powered SpliceCore platform, which combines transcriptomic data and experimental validation to assess more than 14 million alternative RNA-splicing events. The goal is to identify protein isoforms prevalent in tumors but scarce in healthy tissue.
Boehringer will evaluate selected targets for several drug formats, including antibody-drug conjugates, T-cell engagers and multispecific antibodies. After the research phase, it can exclusively license chosen targets for development and commercialization.
The deal is valued at more than $1 billion in potential payments to Envisagenics, including upfront and research-related payments, option fees, milestones and potential royalties; the companies did not disclose the breakdown.
Why it matters:
alternative RNA splicing can create cancer-specific protein variants that conventional gene-centered target discovery may miss. If the platform’s predictions translate experimentally and clinically, those variants could support more selective cancer medicines with a wider safety margin.
