BioNTech says it will close its German sites in Tübingen, Marburg and Idar-Oberstein after months of efforts to find buyers failed.
About 1,800 employees at the three German locations are affected. BioNTech says it has agreed with its works council on additional redundancy terms and socially responsible measures.
The current schedule is to end operations in Tübingen by the end of 2027, Marburg in early 2028 and Idar-Oberstein by the end of 2028.
The company cited difficult market and investment conditions. The closures are part of a wider restructuring as BioNTech reduces pandemic-era manufacturing capacity and shifts focus toward oncology; COVID-19 vaccine production is being transferred to partner Pfizer.
BioNTech is also winding down its Singapore operations. Its wider restructuring could affect up to 1,860 positions.
