ARPA-H announced the first awardees in its ADVOCATE program, a 39-month effort backed by up to $62.7 million to develop FDA-authorized AI for cardiovascular care.
The initial teams include Atman Health, UpDoc, Tempus AI, and researchers from Stanford University, Duke University, and Kaiser Permanente.
The systems are intended to provide continuous support for people with heart failure, including monitoring symptoms, managing medications, recommending diet and exercise, coordinating appointments, and potentially ordering tests.
Atman Health received up to $7.7 million to develop a voice-first, patient-facing AI system beginning with heart-failure care. UpDoc received up to $9.2 million and is leading a broader clinical AI effort, with Microsoft, OpenAI, and NVIDIA participating.
ARPA-H says the program will also develop supervisory safeguards to monitor AI accuracy and patient safety. The tools are still under development and would need FDA authorization before clinical deployment.
