Trump Issues Executive Order Overhauling Pediatric Vaccine Recommendations

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 10, 2026, calling for an overhaul of U.S. pediatric vaccine recommendations, reducing the number of routinely recommended childhood vaccines from 18 to 11, and urging that the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot be split into three separate single-disease vaccines administered at different visits.

The order establishes three categories of vaccines:
11 core vaccines recommended for all children (measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type B, pneumococcal disease, human papillomavirus, and varicella), vaccines for certain high‑risk groups, and vaccines subject to shared clinical decision‑making (including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rotavirus, meningococcal disease, influenza, and COVID‑19).

Although the order is framed as federal guidance rather than a mandate, it directs federal agencies to align regulations and funding with the new "Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations," encourages states to review school‑entry requirements, and instructs the Department of Justice to pursue legal challenges against state vaccine‑mandate laws that conflict with parental authority, religious freedom, and medical exemptions.

Public health experts and major medical associations have criticized the changes as lacking robust immunological evidence and warned that spacing out shots and reducing the number of recommended vaccines could increase the risk of vaccine‑preventable disease outbreaks among children.
