Novo Nordisk Tests Lower Maintenance Doses of Oral Wegovy

Novo Nordisk has begun the OASIS-5 Phase 3 trial to identify whether lower maintenance doses of its oral Wegovy pill can still produce meaningful weight loss.

The randomized, placebo-controlled study began enrolling on August 12 and will include about 450 adults with obesity or overweight across sites in the United States and Europe.

Participants will receive two undisclosed lower doses of oral semaglutide or placebo for 60 weeks. The trial is expected to run until 2028.

The current approved maintenance dose of oral Wegovy is 25 mg once daily, reached through a gradual dose-escalation schedule.

Novo says a wider range of maintenance doses could provide physicians more flexibility and improve patients’ treatment experience, particularly for people who have difficulty tolerating the highest dose.

Researchers will measure weight change as the primary outcome and also monitor waist circumference, metabolic measures, weight-loss milestones and side effects.

The trial does not yet mean lower-dose Wegovy is approved or proven effective; its specific doses and results remain undisclosed.
