Massachusetts biotech downturn may create conditions for a rebound

Massachusetts’ biopharma workforce fell by about 3,600 jobs, or 3.1%, in 2025—the first annual decline in more than two decades of MassBio tracking.

At the same time, lab and manufacturing space expanded dramatically, reaching roughly 63.2 million square feet, with vacancy around 31% statewide by mid-2026.

Industry leaders say the combination of available facilities and highly skilled workers now on the sidelines could help Massachusetts attract companies quickly when biotech investment recovers.

The downturn has been driven by weaker early-stage funding, layoffs, cautious hiring, and uncertainty surrounding federal research support.

There are early recovery signals:
major companies including Sanofi, Vertex, Pfizer, Alnylam, AbbVie, and Biogen reportedly added Massachusetts workers in 2026.

The state still retains major advantages—world-class universities, research institutions, experienced talent, established pharmaceutical companies, and a deep drug-development pipeline—but filling excess lab space may take years.
