Eli Lilly has filed six lawsuits against U.S. companies it accuses of illegally selling black-market versions of its experimental obesity drug retatrutide.
The lawsuits target compounding pharmacies, medical spas, and online sellers allegedly marketing retatrutide to consumers despite the drug remaining under clinical development and not yet approved by regulators.
Retatrutide is still in Phase 3 clinical trials for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and related conditions, with no regulator having approved it for human use.
Lilly has referred more than 200 individuals and entities to the FDA, the U.S. Justice Department, state attorneys general, law enforcement, and professional licensing boards, and has flagged over 14,000 websites, ads, social media posts, and product listings in more than 100 countries related to the black market trade.
The companies being sued include Aesthetic Envy Cosmetic Centers, Astra Peptides, Legendary Peptides, Striker Pharmacy, Texas Peptides, and Lone Star Peptide, which Lilly alleges are selling unverified, unapproved retatrutide products often labeled as 'research-use only.'
