China’s rapid advance in biotech is expected to slow as companies experiment at the cutting edge of R&D, according to Pfizer’s Andrew Baum, who attributes the slowdown to the inherent risks of first-in-class drug development.
Baum’s comments come amid recognition that China has already become a leading source of innovative medicines and clinical trials, with 40% of global oncology clinical studies now conducted there and China outpacing Europe in new drug launches.
Pfizer’s leadership also warns that U.S. biotech dominance is being challenged by China’s long-term strategic investments, regulatory reforms mirroring the FDA, and lower-cost, faster clinical development, urging the U.S. to strengthen its own innovation ecosystem rather than focus on slowing China.
