BMS expands AI footprint with Nvidia, aiming for most powerful AI factory in life sciences

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to build what it describes as the most powerful AI factory in the life sciences industry.

The project will deploy a new NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD powered by eight DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, giving BMS one of the most advanced and energy‑efficient NVIDIA infrastructures in life sciences; Vera Rubin is estimated to deliver up to ten times greater performance per megawatt than its predecessor.

The expanded AI infrastructure will support BMS’s proprietary foundation models and NVIDIA BioNeMo‑based workflows, enabling researchers across oncology, hematology, cardiovascular, immunology and neuroscience to compress discovery timelines and run more complex agentic workflows.

BMS’s existing DGX SuperPOD went live in 2024 and has already been used in oncology research, for example by training large‑scale imaging models on clinical trial data; the new Vera Rubin cluster will be co‑located in a commercial data center and will be roughly 15 times more powerful than the prior system, according to BMS executives.

This move underscores a broader trend in pharma, where companies such as Lilly and others are also building large Nvidia‑powered AI supercomputers, and positions BMS as a leading example of the hybrid intelligence model in which AI co‑scientists and human researchers collaborate on first‑ and best‑in‑class medicines.
