Biogen has announced that it will pause or terminate investment in the "majority of legacy Apellis research programs" after completing its $5.6 billion acquisition of Apellis Pharmaceuticals in May 2026. The move is part of Biogen's integration plans and reflects a decision to narrow its R&D focus to the commercialized assets that drove the deal—Empaveli® and Syfovre®, both based on pegcetacoplan. Biogen continues to evaluate Apellis’ remaining clinical and preclinical programs for strategic fit, and has eliminated a small number of research roles within Apellis as part of the pipeline cuts.
