US FDA advisers weigh updating 2026-27 COVID vaccines for XFG variant; meeting on May 28, 2026, to discuss composition for 2026-2027 season.

The XFG subvariant (NB.1.8.1, Stratus) is currently dominant in the U.S., estimated to account for a majority of cases through April 11, 2026.

The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) will consider targeting the XFG antigen or other JN.1-lineage subvariants, including LP.8.1.

Major vaccine manufacturers (Pfizer, Moderna, Sanofi) say they are prepared to produce an updated XFG-based COVID vaccine for the 2026-27 season if the committee recommends it.
