HHS and CMS Urge Hospitals to Align Patient Menus with 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines

CMS issued a memorandum on March 20-30, 2026, reminding hospitals of Medicare conditions of participation (42 CFR §482.28) requiring menus to meet patient nutritional needs and align with the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans released January 7, 2026.245

Recommendations include limiting ultra-processed foods, eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages unless clinically necessary, replacing refined grains with whole grains, and prioritizing minimally processed proteins, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats.124

HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. visited Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami on March 31, 2026, as part of the 'Take Back Your Health' tour to promote the initiative.16

Florida announced a farm-to-hospital partnership to source more local food for hospitals, starting with Nicklaus Children's Hospital.16
