Government of Canada and Partners Invest Over $41 Million in Cancer Prevention Research

The Government of Canada and six partner organizations announced an investment of over $41 million in cancer prevention research on February 26, 20261

The funding will support 19 research teams working over the next five years to develop new approaches for cancer prevention, risk reduction, and early detection12

Six research funding organizations collaborated on this initiative:
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Terry Fox Research Institute ($10M), the Canadian Cancer Society ($7M), the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development ($3.5M), the Cancer Research Society ($2M), and BioCanRx ($500,000)1

This is the single largest CIHR-led investment in cancer prevention research to date1

Research indicates that improving cancer prevention and risk reduction could help prevent 4 in 10 cancer cases in Canada1

The announcement was made by Minister of Health Marjorie Michel at UHN's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, with two of the supported research teams located at UHN13

The Terry Fox Research Institute is funding six research teams focusing on prevention strategies for cervical, gastric, blood, colorectal, prostate, and obesity-related cancers4
